It's not what I know, it's who I know.

You could call it my daily mantra. People who hear me use this phrase might think it's in jest, but in reality, it's a reflection of how I live my life, how I view what makes travel special, and how we operate our adventure walking tours.

I'm Edward Piegza, president and founder of Classic Journeys.

Over the past 16 years in the luxury walking tour business - 13 of them as head of Classic Journeys - I've been fortunate to meet some unforgettable people. Some were our guests; some were our hosts, in countries all over the world.

Like the billionaire ensconced on an island off the Amalfi Coast. And the shepherd in Sardinia who served us homemade honey and ricotta cheese on hand-carved corkwood plates. Then there was the first winemaker to reopen his business after the fall of Communism in Croatia... and the owners of a high-country sheep station in New Zealand who happen to be passionate ecologists to boot.

Beginning today, I'll be using this space to share some behind-the-scenes anecdotes about Classic Journeys tours, including tales of people and places we encounter on the road.

If you're a fellow frequent traveler, my comments may trigger memories of your own, from the humorous to the heartwarming. If you share my passion for adventure travel but have fewer opportunities to break away, you may welcome the chance to indulge your wanderlust.

Most of all, I hope you'll feel free to email me any time with your thoughts on adventure travel in general and walking tours in particular: blog@classicjourneys.com. If you would like more information about any of our Cultural Walking Adventures, please click here.
